About exhibition

The Restoration Process of the Old House-Studio

Can a house be "organic"?

With limited hands, budget, and experience, is it possible to build one's own dwelling from scratch? How does the living aesthetics pursued by a bamboo craftsman manifest in daily life?

Driven by intense curiosity and a hands-on nature, Khóo Jit Tek rented an old traditional courtyard house (Sanheyuan) in Emei Township, Hsinchu, with a friend in 2020. This marked the beginning of a five-year restoration journey.

From bamboo mud walls, slaking lime plaster, making earth bricks, to charring wooden beams, every technique was learned from the ground up. These experiences, seemingly unrelated to bamboo weaving, gradually became essential nourishment for her creations, shaping the connection between her work and life.

This is both an exhibition of work and an ongoing experiment in living.

In addition to appreciating bamboo crafts, visitors are invited to step into the old house and the surrounding mountain scenery, making the exhibition a slow-paced journey. From the old house to bamboo ware, from the land to daily life—these works represent not just craft, but my continuous exploration of an ideal life.

【Kuan-Kuan Basket】Series: Inspired by the Chha̍k-pìn ( Flattened Bamboo) technique commonly found in bamboo walls and furniture, this series scales down architectural structure into bamboo baskets, showcasing a solid and warm form.

【New / Hsinchu Bamboo Basket】Series The title plays on "New Bamboo" and "Hsinchu," representing an artisan rooted in Hsinchu redesigning antique bamboo pieces. Based on the traditional technique of scraping the waxy surface of bamboo strips for a non-slip texture, this series preserves the material's natural grain. Balancing the rugged and the refined, it reinterprets bamboo ware for contemporary living.

【Regeneration】Series: Utilizing the remnants left after hand-shaving bamboo splints, these pieces are transformed into daily utensils like tea saucers, extending the life of the material.
